A lot of students are under the impression that the state educational path is still the best way into IT. Why then are commercial certificates becoming more in demand? Industry now acknowledges that for an understanding of the relevant skills, the right accreditation from the likes of Microsoft, CISCO, Adobe and CompTIA is far more effective and specialised - for much less time and money. Higher education courses, for example, often get bogged down in a great deal of loosely associated study - and a syllabus that's too generalised. Students are then held back from understanding the specific essentials in enough depth.

Just like the advert used to say: 'It does what it says on the tin'. All an employer has to do is know what they need doing, and then request applicants with the correct exam numbers. They'll know then that all applicants can do what they need.

Each programme of learning should always lead to a properly recognised accreditation at the finale - not some little 'in-house' piece of paper. Only fully recognised qualifications from the top companies like Microsoft, Adobe, CompTIA and Cisco will be useful to a future employer.

It makes sense if you're just getting started get going on your career-track with a training program software-support. Software support will provide you with some lower-level certifications, that will help you get your first foot-on-the-ladder, and offer you an insight into another worthwhile area of the business. A very good training course for a beginner is the 'MCDST' ('Microsoft Certified Desktop Support Technician'). If you continue this certification with the MCTS and the MCITP, you will have done an entire career track which should in most cases take around 500 hrs to finish. Much like any career-track though, we advise you to consider very carefully ahead of finalising your options. Speak with a reliable advisor with practical knowledge of the profession first, in order to be sure your preferred employment will be interesting, and your learning style matches the style of training. If you really don't concentrate closely on where you would like to finish up, you may find that you're way off track & thousands of pounds worse off!
